Head of the Infectious Diseases Unit at Children’s Hospital, PIMS, Dr Maqbool Hussain has defined ‘leukemia’ as a type of blood cancer. He said it starts when the bone marrow quickly begins to produce abnormal white blood cells called leukemia cells. One of the most common types of cancer in children is blood cancer which requires early intervention and treatment, he added.
Most of the cases in Pakistan go unreported in children and not diagnosed in time due to lack of awareness, this is a major concern, he pointed out.
Talking about blood cancer, Rizwan Taj, DIN at PIMS, said a prolonged fever for more than a month and bone pain are one of the most common symptoms. Likewise, consistent weight loss, nosebleeds and low blood platelets indicate the severity of the condition that requires early detection and treatment, he added.
“People should not lose hope when diagnosed with leukemia because we provide comprehensive treatment plans for various types of blood cancers including leukemia. The treatment for these cancers depends on the type of blood cancer,” said he added.
In complicated cases where aggressive treatment is needed, we have the option of bone marrow transplants, he said, adding that a lot of blood and blood products are needed and we are able to meet this demand. with the help of volunteer blood donors,” he added.
Assistant Professor, Head of Department of Oncology at PIMS Children’s Hospital Dr. Nuzhat Yasmeen said that cancer remains a major health threat to people in Pakistan and around the world, adding that prevention of cancer cancer includes providing healthy food to children, following a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise. Exercising is also beneficial.
She added that “World Leukemia Day” is celebrated every year in September with the aim of raising awareness about childhood cancer, early diagnosis and treatment options.
She said that blood cancer is a treatable disease, but we need to educate people so that if there are any abnormal changes such as weight loss in children, skin discoloration, severe pain, swelling in any part of the body, glands or tumor, it would be easily diagnosed.
